UK government signs contract with tech company that proposed using COVID passport as national ID system
The company has an extremely “sinister attitude toward monitoring citizens.”
The UK government has been accused of covertly introducing a national ID program after partnering with a company that has advocated turning vaccine passports into a multipurpose document.
Entrust, an IT company touting itself as a “global leader in identities, payments and data protection,” was awarded a contract by the Department of Health and Social Care last month to work on Britain’s Covid-19 vaccine certification system, reports RT. The company was awarded £250,000 ($346,000) to provide cloud computing services for the government’s Covid health certification system, iNews reported. The contract will expire in March 2022, but the government has the option to extend it for another year.
Health Minister Matt Hancock said last month that a vaccination certificate will be “necessary” for international travel, and in recent weeks reports have surfaced alleging that the UK government may require the document from people attending sporting events or other large gatherings.
Judging by Entrust’s own stance on the matter, the government may have even more ambitious plans for the digital certificate. In a February blog post published on the company’s website, Jann Markey, Entrust’s product marketing director, suggested that the advent of vaccine passports could be used as an opportunity to roll out a national ID as part of “the infrastructure of the new normal”.
